The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a computer adaptive standardized test that is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), under the sponsorship of the Graduate Record Examinations Board. It aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills for students aiming to apply for master’s and doctoral programs. The GRE is primarily used for admission into graduate and business programs, particularly in the United States.
The GRE exam is divided into Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and an Unscored section. For Ph.D. and Post Doctorate fellows, there is a separate Research section.
Analytical Writing:
- Two essays: "Issue" and "Argument" tasks
- 30 minutes given for each task
- Scoring scale: 0-6 with half point increment
Verbal Reasoning:
- Two sections
- Each section: 20 questions, 30 minutes
- Sections include: 6 Text completion, 4 Sentence equivalence, 10 Reading comprehension
- Scoring scale: 130-170, 1 point increment
Quantitative Reasoning:
- Two sections
- Each section: 20 questions, 35 minutes
- Sections include: 8 Quantitative comparison, 9 Problem solving items, 3 Data Interpretation questions
- Scoring scale: 130-170, 1 point increment
Unscored GRE Sections: Experimental or Research
The unscored, so-called “Experimental” section and Research section have no effect on your GRE score. You may see either, but not both, on your test. What does that mean for you as a test taker? You should do your best on all of the Quant and Verbal sections. The Research section is a little different. It will always come at the end of the test and it will always be identified as an unscored section. The test maker may offer you an incentive for completing the section or for performing well on it. So, read the instructions and decide whether you want to take the section. Your score will not be affected either way.
Section | Structure | Estimated Timing |
---|---|---|
Analytical Writing | 1 section, 1 essay task | 30 mins |
Quantitative Reasoning | 2 sections, 27 questions total | 47 mins |
Verbal Reasoning | 2 sections, 27 questions total | 41 mins |
